I am diagnosed to have tuberculosis of the intestine. What is it?
A. It is just like tuberculosis of chest; the only difference is that the bacteria have attacked the intestines. It may give you abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fluid in your abdomen, ascites. Many times a similar disease, Crohnís disease, is confused with tuberculosis of the intestine; so diagnosis must be made with accuracy.

My bowel habits have changed recently and I am losing weight.
A. This could be serious especially if you are of the age of above 50 years. More so if you are passing blood also. See your doctor who may order colonoscopy; a test where your large bowels are examined by a flexible telescope.

I have diarrhea, weight loss and mouth ulcers.
A. There could be many reasons for this; but commonly this is seen in Celiac disease, a type of wheat allergy seen more commonly in north Indian descents or Crohnís disease which is an inflammatory condition of the large bowel. You need to see a good Gastroenterologist, a doctor who specializes in intestinal diseases.

I have diarrhea and blood in the stool.
A. This is important. You could have infection of the intestine; bacillary or amebic dysentery, or Ulcerative colitis or Crohnís colitis, which are inflammatory illnesses of the large intestine. Sometimes even cancer of the intestine can present like this. If it is only blood and no diarrhea then the commonest cause is hemorrhoids or piles.

I have diarrhea preceded by crampy pain in center of tummy.
A. This is usually suggestive of amebiasis, a kind of infection of the intestine.

I have diarrhea and loss of weight; and fever
A. Diarrhea has innumerable reasons and sometimes very difficult to diagnose. You may have tuberculosis of the intestine or some inflammatory disease of your intestine like Crohnís disease or ulcerative colitis. You need proper work-up including blood test and endoscopy.

I have diarrhea and failure to gain weight and height.
A. Any prolonged diarrhea could do this. You may be allergic to wheat; especially if you are of north Indian or Irish descent and a proper work up is a must.

I feel gassy when I drink milk or milk products.
A. This is very suggestive of improper digestion of milk sugar, Lactose. This is known as lactose intolerance. This could be tested in laboratory by lactose tolerance test and if confirmed you may either use enzymes to pre digest lactose or use soya milk which does not have lactose.

I have loose motions whenever I eat something.
A. This is common more so in children. This is called exaggerated gastro-colic reflex. You may not have any underlying disease. Occasionally it is also seen in ulcerative colitis, where this could be so bad that the patient is afraid of eating and thus he loses lot of weight.

I have loose motions whenever I eat outside.
A. This is fairly common. This could be infection you may acquire from outside food or very spicy nature of food.
